Last meeting: The Packers were hammered in the divisional playoffs as Colin Kaepernick galloped to a quarterback-record 181 rushing yards in the 49ers’ 45-31 win. Green Bay’s defense was so thoroughly dismantled, coaches traveled to Texas A&M to study ways to defend the read-option.
Packing a run game: Coach Mike McCarthy has vowed Green Bay will rush more effectively. Rookie RB Eddie Lacy and a new-look offensive line will get a stern test.
Replacing Michael Crabtree: Kaepernick relied heavily on the now-injured wide receiver last season. TE Vernon Davis, who struggled to mesh with Kaepernick in 2012, should have a bigger role.
Need to know: Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was sacked 51 times in 2012. His left tackle, rookie David Bakhtiari, will be asked to contain both Smiths, Justin and Aldon
