DONTE MONCRIEF
The particulars: A 6-foot-3, 226-pound junior wide receiver.
The past: This still amazes me: Moncrief was not selected for the MS/AL All-Star Game. Whoops. Moncrief was a top prospect, No. 7 on the Clarion-Ledger 10 Most Wanted after doing a little bit of everything for Raleigh. He came to Ole Miss, where it became clear almost immediately he was already the team’s best receiver. His 31 receptions for 454 yards led Ole Miss in 2011, but he exploded in 2012 with a 66-catch, 979-yard, 10-touchdown campaign. He ended the season in a big way, with huge games against LSU and Mississippi State that established himself as one of the SEC’s best young receivers. He was also the namesake for this video.
The present: So what’s left for Moncrief to do as a junior? Be an All-SEC receiver every weekend. Remember, Georgia held him without a catch, and he only caught two balls at Alabama. Beating the best cornerbacks, and not letting the safety take him out of the game, is the thing Moncrief has to do to go from very good to great. Can he do it? I think he can. He’s catching every pass thrown his way in practice, and almost looks bored doing it. It’s just so routine at this point, that he may need the Aug. 29 season opener to get closer in order to find that extra gear. As far as numbers go, the combination of his talent and a wide-open offense that will get him the ball in multiple ways makes it likely that he attack all the single-season receiving records (he already has touchdowns).
The future: Moncrief could have every receiving record, but he probably has to stay for his senior season to do it (he needs 101 catches, 1,213 yards and 10 touchdowns to take all three). Will that happen? I don’t know. Moncrief has been open about considering the NFL Draft, but he also seems to be taking an adult approach to it. If he has a great season and the time (meaning draft position) is right, then it makes sense to go. If not, he comes back and plays one more year.
