C.J. Mosley

#8 C.J Mosley:
Position: Outside Linebacker.
University: Alabama.
Height: 6 feet, 2 inches.
Weight: 234 lbs
Draft Projection: Late 1st Round/Early 2nd Round (2014 NFL Draft).

There’s not much that C.J Mosley hasn’t done during his time at Alabama. A two-time National Champion and linchpin of their defense in 2012, he now faces the prospect of coping with being the units undisputed leader.

If he can achieve this and lead the Crimson Tide to success again this term, the he will be the latest in a long line of Alabama linebackers drafted in the first two rounds. Rolando McClain, , Nico Johnson Dont’a Hightower and Courtney Upshaw have all gone in the first 40 picks and Mosley definitely has the potential to follow-suit, providing he has a good 2013.

Mosley has been contributing to Alabama’s success ever since his freshman year in 2010, when he was third on the team in tackles with 67. He also had an impressive 10 pass-breakups and two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

In 2011 he split the starting slot with Johnson and was used more in passing situations as Johnson is a better run defender. Despite missing two games with a dislocated shoulder, Mosley was still a valuable contributor. The linebacker recorded 37 tackles (4.5 for loss), 2 sacks and an interception. He dislocated his hip in the National Championship game, but worked incredibly hard and was fit for the start of the 2012 season.

Last season he emerged as the defenses most consistent player, leading the team with 107 tackles (8 for a loss). He also recorded two interceptions, four sacks and played a pivotal role in consecutive championships for the Crimson Tide.

Mosley’s most impressive bit of film from 2012 was his play against Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. While most Alabama defenders found Manziel too much to handle, Mosley excelled in the game. He chased “Johnny Football” all over field, recording 14 tackles and a sack.

After other big games against Michigan, Tennessee and Ole Miss, Mosley was selected as a consensus first-team All-American and an All-SEC pick.

If Mosley can stay injury-free, then his production can increase further for his senior season. Even though they have lost some talent to the NFL, their staff has done a wonderful job of assembling talent around Mosley, giving him the best chance to impress NFL scouts.

His sternest test appears to be in the second game of the season, a rematch against Texas A&M. It all depends on whether or not Manziel will be available as his eligibility is now in serious question. If he is, then playing the Aggies and their high-octane offense will be an incredible task to overcome. If Mosley is as good as he was last year, then it will do his chances of being a first-round selection no harm at all.

Alabama also come up against Ole Miss and LSU, who are both expected to have powerful offenses in 2013 as both have good receivers and quarterbacks who like to throw the ball downfield, so Mosley will get plenty of opportunities to show just how effective he can be at the next level.

Nick Saban’s team are favourites for the BCS National Championship once again, which will be the University’s third in a row. If they can accomplish this, then Mosley will have three titles to show for his four years in college, which will look very good on his resume when the evaluation process begins.

Scouts will fall in-love with Mosley, who is an extremely rounded linebacker, equally strong in run support or pass defense. The Crimson Tide have developed Mosley into a true three-down player who has no need to ever come off the field.

What’s most impressive about Mosley on film is his ability in pass coverage, which is tailor-made for the NFL. He is sensational in all aspects of defending the pass, but in particular man coverage. Mosley is very instinctive and is exceptional at reading the quarterback. He also has the speed to cover slot receivers and can match strides with them down the field.

Mosley can also play zone coverage well, and is very intelligent in his picking up of receivers running routes in his zone, so he really does have everything when it comes to pass defense. He could play either outside or middle linebacker on passing downs, and versatility like that doesn’t go unnoticed by the decision-makers on draft day.

Mosley’s instincts also make him a very good run defender. He finds the ball effortlessly and is fast enough to chase down running backs sideline-to-sideline. The linebacker has made tremendous strides in his run support since his freshman year and it will be interesting to see how much further he has developed this aspect of the game during the offseason.

One negative on Mosley is his size. At 6’2, that is undersized for the position at the next level. Luckily for him, he won’t be asked to be the all-out pass-rusher like a Dion Jordan in this years draft, as teams will want to utilise his other assets.

He doesn’t get enough sacks, mainly due to the fact that he doesn’t attack the quaterback as nearly as he should. Mosley has never had the potential for double-digit sacks, nor will he have in the NFL, but that won’t affect his draft stock in the slightest. Any team drafting him for that purpose hasn’t watched enough tape on the gifted leader of the national championship winning defense.

So, with another solid season in 2013 Mosley will have one of the most decorated careers we have seen for some time. Teams looking for help at linebacker will find Mosley to be an attractive proposition due to his flexibility and athletic prowess.

The NFL is a passing league, so his ability to cover Tight Ends and slot receivers will elevate his draft stock considerably. Mosley has the potential to be an impact player at the next level without question.

Mosley looks to be a first-or-second round pick heading into 2013. Linebackers have tended to fall in recent drafts as teams prioritise other positions. Mosley has the luxury of knowing his versatility will ensure he will be drafted in the first 50 picks, that is a guarantee.

If he becomes a three-time national champion, then a trip to New York wouldn’t be completely out of the question.
