Kolton Browning

Louisiana-Monroe became the darling of the Sun Belt Conference in 2012, much in part due to its thrilling win at Arkansas and the electrifying play of quarterback Kolton Browning.

In 2013, the Warhawks are hoping a memorable fall last year is just a preview of what’s to come.

“I think certainly last year was a good season for us. Eight wins is not a great season, but for us it was a huge season,” ULM coach Todd Berry said. “It was that season where you break down that barrier of, ‘Well you can’t have a winning season,’ and, ‘You can’t beat a top 10 team,’ and ‘You can’t win a big one on the road,’ and, ‘You can’t do this and you can’t do that.’ Our fan base has been hearing that for years. For those things to not be out there anymore and instead of other things being, ‘We can’t do this,’ there’s the hope that you can do this.”

Louisiana-Monroe has eight starters back on an offense who thrived on passing and nine starters back on defense who were above average in stopping the run in 2012.

Beyond that, Berry said ULM’s depth is one of the big reasons the Warhawks were picked by the league’s coaches as co-favorites to win the 2013 conference championship.

“We have a lot of guys that were injured that year that we felt like were some of our better players that are back with us now,” he said. “So the competition on the field is that much more intense. I’m really excited about the chemistry of our team and their expectations.”

Leading receiver J’Ron Hamm (62 receptions, 915 yards, six scores) and leading rusher out of the backfield Jyruss Edwards (438 yards for six touchdowns) highlight the offensive weaponry while defensive backs Vincent Eddie (68 tackles) and Cordero Smith (71 tackles) and lineman Gerrand Johnson (four sacks) stand out on defense.

The big-time name, however, is Browning.

The conference’s offensive player of the year in 2012 after throwing for 3,049 yards and rushing for 488 returned for his senior season with some unfinished business left on his plate.

“I took this offseason to make sure that I can stay healthy for a full season instead of playing six, seven games and then getting hurt and maybe missing a couple games or not being able to play to my full potential,” the Mabank, Texas, native said. “I’ve gained some weight, 20 or 25 pounds, and that’s really helped me out. It was tough to kind of learn how to run with it and move with it at first, but I’ve got it down now. I need to be out there on the field for all 12 games, not just for the first four games and miss a couple (in) conference because when it gets down to conference, we have some people picked us up top and that’s where we want to be. We want to be at the top and finish this thing out right and make sure the seniors get to go out with a ring.”

Louisiana-Monroe’s appearance in the Independence Bowl – a 45-14 loss to Ohio – was the first trip to the Football Bowl Subdivision postseason in program history. The Warhawks made the then I-AA playoffs four times from 1987-93, including the 1987 national championship.

To get back to the postseason, ULM must get through nonconference games at Oklahoma, Wake Forest and Baylor while hosting Grambling State and Tulane.

All those games come before hosting Western Kentucky on Thursday, Oct. 3 – the Hilltoppers’ last foreseeable trip to Monroe before moving on to Conference USA in 2014.

The Tops are 4-4 all-time against ULM, winning on a game-winning field-goal in 2011 and losing on a two-point conversion in overtime last year at Houchens-Smith Stadium.
