Cooper Helfet

What a difference a year can make.

That much is clear for Cooper Helfet, the former Redwood High football standout and Duke University All-ACC honorable mention tight end, who has displayed confidence and maturity in his second training camp stint with the Seattle Seahawks.

“I remember last year I was just worried a lot,” Helfet said Monday after the team’s 10th training camp practice along the shores of Lake Washington at Virginia Mason Athletic Center. “I was always nervous of where I was supposed to go.

“I was thinking, ‘Is this going to be the day I might be out of here? Am I going to make it?'”

Helfet made it up until the team’s final roster cut-down to 53 players, when he was waived/injured by the club with a separated shoulder. He caught four balls for 25 yards and two touchdowns in four exhibition games, but his shoulder injury kept him out until late December, when the Seahawks re-signed Helfet to their practice squad to close out the season.

“I love it up here in Seattle,” Helfet said, who now dons No. 48 — a reversal of the No. 84 he wore at last year’s camp. “We were going to the playoffs, and it was definitely the right choice to make. I’m happy I came back up here — I knew the system, I already knew all the coaches, so I’m happy it worked out.”

This season, the tight end position is ripe with competition behind incumbent starter Zach Miller, who to this point has been sidelined with a sore foot on the team’s preseason physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Rookie fifth-round pick Luke Willson, second-year pro Sean McGrath and Helfet make up the position — in that order — behind Miller, but the depth chart isn’t set in stone, as the competition is ongoing.

“We’ve got a lot of good athletes at tight end,” Helfet said. “All I can do is just do the best I can every day, try to get in my playbook, keep my body fresh and make the plays I know I’m capable of making. I can’t do anything about any of the rest of it, so the more I keep that kind of stuff out of my head, the better.”

It’s that attitude that has Helfet all smiles on the football field and in the meeting room with coach Pete Carroll — a fellow Redwood alum — and tight ends coach Pat McPherson. Helfet says his relationship with the coaching staff and players has evolved from strictly business a year ago to more friendship-oriented, as the two sides become more familiar with one another, and more importantly, with the offense.

“I’m just more comfortable,” Helfet said of his time at camp. “I know what I’m supposed to be doing and I can relax out there, which gives me more time to read the defense and make the plays.”

And Helfet was doing just that late last week, when he hauled in several passes from Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson over the team’s two-hour session, two of which were deemed “circus” catches by Carroll, who couldn’t wait to talk about the former Kentfield resident in his post-practice press conference.

“Cooper had some great catches,” Carroll said. “He had started camp a bit slow, but he has great hands and it’s really great that it’s starting to come together for him.”

Helfet’s year-over-year improvement will be something to watch as the Seahawks start their exhibition season on Thursday night, when they take on the Chargers at 7 p.m. at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium.

“I feel better about it,” Helfet said. “I’m getting off the ball better, I know my assignments better, I’m a little bit stronger — all those things are just adding together to help me out.”
