Ted Thompson

Ted Thompson has served as general manager of the Green Bay Packers for 8½ years and has been the architect of five playoff teams, three division champions and one Super Bowl titlist.

Thompson turned 60 in January, and his contract extends through the 2015 season.

In his annual Q&A with Press-Gazette Media, Thompson discussed his future, the prospects for the 2013 Packers, and some of his philosophies on life and football.

Q: What’s the hardest part about your job?

Thompson: The roster reductions, and both of them. Some people think the first one is easy, it’s not. You get attached to the guys. You always wonder if you’re doing the right thing because there’s no one set answer, there’s no one real right answer, there’s multiple different decisions you have to make.

Q: What was your experience when you got cut from the Houston Oilers after a 10-year career? Do you remember it vividly?

Thompson: I do. We practiced and this was after the final cut, the Oilers had signed a defensive lineman that was a second-round draft choice. There had been a holdout all this time. So after practice I was changing, or in the shower or something, Coach grabbed me and took me in, started telling me how much he liked me, how valuable I was to the team and I got to thinking he was going to give me a raise. But he was telling me he was going to release me.

Q: Do you use that experience in your dealing with players now?

Thompson: One of the things I think is important is to treat these guys with respect. Everybody did the best they could. If they want a critique what they did good and what they did not so good … but we try to be upright, treat them like men. Hopefully, at the end of the day, even though it doesn’t work out, they enjoy their time here with the Packers.

Q: What’s your definition of success?

Thompson: If you’re lucky enough to have good friends, if you’re lucky enough to have family, your health, I think you’re ahead of most.

Q: And what about success in terms of football?

Thompson: I think get up and do the best you can every day and when you go to bed at night, know that you did all you can do, whether you’re a player or coach or you’re in the personnel department, or wherever in this building in terms of how it relates with the Packers. I think get up and try to do a good job every day.
