Florida State senior linebacker Christian Jones led the team in tackles last year with 95. But he also had zero sacks.
One of those numbers might drop this season in the Seminoles’ new defense, but the other will likely rise dramatically.
In first-year defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt’s system, Jones is spending much of his time lining up at the “Jack” position. Sometimes he has his hand in the ground like a true defensive end, other times he’s standing up on the edge. But either way, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound senior will be rushing the quarterback a lot more in 2013.
So he has spent a lot of time this preseason working on precisely that.
“Being able to come off the edge and getting a chance to make a big play, it just gets you amped,” Jones said. “It makes you want to make more plays. It’s kind of like an adrenaline rush being able to do it.”
Jones led the FSU defense in tackles a season ago with 95, but he had just six tackles for loss. He scored a touchdown on a fumble return against South Florida, but other than that he didn’t make very many game-changing plays in 2012.
His new role will afford him much for of an opportunity to do just that. And he’s taking it very seriously.
“Right now I just work everything off of my speed,” Jones said. “Because most of the time I come off the ball pretty quick. Usually a guy is so scared of my speed they like to over-set a lot. So right now I’m just working on running up the field and then cutting back in.”
Though he is still technically a linebacker and he meets with that position group every day, Jones spends at least a part of every practice working with defensive ends coach Sal Sunseri.
He said the role isn’t not much different than what he was asked to do as a five-star prep All-American in Winter Park.
“It wasn’t really weird because I used to do some of the stuff we’re doing now in high school,” Jones said. “Like right now they’re moving me around a lot. And in high school they did the same thing. Sometimes they had me standing up blitzing outside or I would put my hand in the dirt. So it’s not like it was weird. It was just getting used to it again.”
