How do you measure UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley’s development?

All offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone has to do is look at freshman quarterback Asiantii Woulard.

“All the things I see Asiantii doing, Brett did last year,” Mazzone said. “He’s watching the rush and not seeing what’s going on. Those are growing pains.”

Mazzone is not ready to call Hundley fully grown, but there has been a significant jump this season.

“He’s in my brain, that’s how I know he’s progressing,” Mazzone said. “He’s saying things like, ‘We need this’ or ‘We need that,’ ‘Give me this’ and ‘Give me that.’ That’s a good sign. It means he is starting to get the feel of the offense.”

Coach Jim Mora sees improvement as well.

“I’ve seen him throw the ball away quicker,” Mora said. “Sometimes that’s a good play for us.”

Mora said Hundley’s off-season review of 2012 game tapes helped him “process everything happened to him last year.”

There is still a learning curve, and it could be heard during Wednesday morning’s practice when Mora bellowed “slide, slide.” Hundley, heading upfield on a run, went butt-first to the ground.

Hundley suffered a sprained ankle on a poor slide against Nebraska last season.

Mora’s assessment?

“He needs to get his feet up,” Mora said. “I don’t think he played baseball. If he did and got on first base, they must have put a runner in for him.”
