The Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders will face off in prime time on Monday Night Football. The Broncos are wildly favored to win due to their 2-0 mark and impressive offensive showings, while the Raiders are 1-1 with their win being over the Jacksonville Jaguars, widely considered candidates to make it to 0-16 this year.
If Oakland has one thing going for them at this point, it’s the fact that this is an AFC West rivalry matchup and they know the Broncos well. Last season Oakland lost both games, but they weren’t totally dominated. They weren’t particularly close games, but it was always clear they were playing them harder. If Oakland hopes to win this one though, they’ll need to be even better.
Let’s take a look at both teams below.
Meet the Broncos
Quarterback Peyton Manning had a down game in Week 2. That is to say he had a down game when in comparison to Week 1, during which he threw for seven touchdown passes. Against Eli Manning and the New York Giants in Week 2, Manning still looked great, throwing for 307 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Denver has now scored 40 points or more in both games. They have the No. 3 passing offense in the league and the No. 1 rushing defense. They haven’t quite gotten their running game going, with 86.0 rushing yards per game, but Knowshon Moreno came on in a big way last week and should be a factor in this one.
Meet the Raiders
Oakland will be trying to get the run to work with Darren McFadden, in addition to possibly getting quarterback scrambles from Terrelle Pryor. McFadden managed 129 yards rushing off of 19 carries against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2. Pryor ran the ball nine times for 50 yards.
It’s unlikely the Raiders will find that success in the run game against Denver. Instead, Pryor will probably need to throw the ball. Denver has a poor passing defense, as they’ve allowed 344.0 passing yards over the first two games. However, Pryor has only thrown for 343 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions over his first two games. Needless to say, he’ll have to do better than that to win on Monday.
