Much of the hype has been around Texas A&M sophomore quarterback Johnny Manziel approaching the current season but for a second consecutive year his biggest protectors are being hidden in the shadows.

Last year Luke Joeckel protected Manziel’s blindside and his success resulted in a second overall pick in April’s NFL Draft.

This season senior Jake Matthews will have Manziel’s back and according to NFL.com Senior Analyst Gil Brandt, it could result in a similar result to Joeckel’s.

Brandt recently ranked Matthews as the No. 1 player on his Hot 100 seniors list.

“The 6-foot-5 1/2, 310-pound Matthews is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame lineman Bruce Matthews,” Brandt said. ”Matthews, the son, elected to stay in school rather than leave early for the NFL draft. This decision can help his professional prospects tremendously.

“Matthews — a good athlete with long arms, quick feet and a 5.1-second 40-yard dash time — will play left tackle this season (assuming the spot vacated by No. 2 overall draft pick Luke Joeckel). The position switch will help increase Matthews’ draft value.”

Matthews was the lone A&M player on the list, with such an influx of young talent on the team.
