Rex Ryan

SUNDAY JULY 28, 2013           4:02 PM

Rex Ryan found himself in unfamiliar territory at the podium Sunday: backpedaling to fall in line with his GM.

Ryan, once a bold and candid speaker, acted as if John Idzik hadn’t stood in the same spot the day before and refused to say his head coach had the final say on who would be the Jets’ starting quarterback, incumbent Mark Sanchez or second-round pick Geno Smith.

“I think you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill, to be honest with you,” Ryan said. “Ever since I’ve been here, it’s my fifth year here, not one decision has been made by one man. Not one decision.”

That’s in sharp contrast to Ryan last season, after he benched Sanchez in favor of Greg McElroy and said, “That is my decision and solely my decision.”

On Sunday, Ryan kept a safe distance from saying he would make the QB decision.

The coach said, “I’ll sit down and talk to the quarterbacks and ultimately that’s who’s telling the quarterback, so when the guys come in, they talk to me. I tell you guys who the quarterback is, but at no time is it a one-man show. It’s always a team decision.”

The head coach gave several long-winded answers about the collective effort of the process, but through them all neglected to answer the central question: who has the final say in determining the quarterback?

The Jets’ coach stated his role in the matter more plainly back on June 5.

“It won’t just be my evaluation, but at the end of the day, I guess it will be if there’s a split camp or whatever, then I will make that decision,” he said then.

On Sunday he sounded a lot more like Idzik from the day before.

Ryan recounted an extensive anecdote from his time in Baltimore that goes against everything else he said. Ryan, once a member of the Ravens defensive coaching staff, voiced his opinion in favor of Joe Flacco that essentially went ignored. Ryan’s point was that every person gets a chance to be heard, but some are listened to more than others, and that ultimately someone will have to make the call.

Ryan said Sunday that, “Our thought process is so similar, John and I, that we are side by side on almost (everything).

“I know I have complete support from John, from Woody (Johnson), from everybody in this organization,” Ryan said. “I want you to understand that number one, don’t think for a second I don’t feel 100% support by everybody in this organization, because I do.”

Ryan said Idzik did not discuss his comments with him.

For their part, Smith and Sanchez said they hadn’t been told who would be making the QB decision. “Not at all. No sir,” said Smith, who added that it doesn’t matter to him who has the final say. Sanchez likewise said he has no concerns, but wide receiver Stephen Hill said he’d like to know who will be throwing the ball to him.

“I can’t wait until they tell us who the starter is so we can get this thing kicked off,” Hill said.
